About
Echizen Coast scenic view showing the dramatic Sea of Japan coastline along Route 305.
Route 305 (国道305号) is a scenic coastal highway running approximately 70km along the Echizen Coast in Fukui Prefecture, from Kanazawa City in Ishikawa Prefecture to Minamiechizen Town. The route passes through the Echizen-Kaga Kaigan Quasi-National Park, designated in 1968 for its strikingly oddly shaped rocks and scenic coastal features. 🔗
The highway runs along most of the coastline with few obstacles like high seawalls, allowing drivers to enjoy continuous views of the Sea of Japan. Multiple parking areas are strategically located along Route 305 where drivers can stop near the most scenic spots, allowing visitors to get out and fully enjoy the scenery that nature has created over time. 🔗
The route is particularly popular as a driving destination, featuring picturesque Japanese fishing villages and coastal scenic spots. 🔗
Cultural & Historical Significance
Route 305 provides a scenic coastal driving experience along the Echizen-Kaga Kaigan Quasi-National Park, a protected landscape spanning 9,246 hectares of coastal areas in Fukui and Ishikawa Prefectures. 🔗
The Echizen Coast stretches from Tojinbo in the north to Sugitsu in Tsuruga in the south, characterized by magnificent cliffs and strange rocks created by an uplifted coastline. 🔗 The Shiokaze Line and National Route 305 serve as the stage for this coastal drive, tracing picturesque Japanese fishing villages and coastal scenic spots including notable rock formations like Kochomon.
The route showcases the dramatic geological formations sculpted by the rough waves of the Japan Sea, with rare types of rock formations visible along the road which runs right next to the water. 🔗
The Echizen Coast represents an important part of Fukui's maritime heritage, with traditional fishing villages that have existed for centuries along the Sea of Japan corridor. The area is designated as a Quasi-National Park (IUCN Category V protected landscape/seascape), recognizing its scenic and cultural significance. The geological features visible from Route 305 parking areas represent millions of years of coastal erosion and uplift, creating educational opportunities for understanding Japan's dynamic coastal geology. 🔗

Major Parking Area Viewpoints
1. Kochomon (Kocho Gate) Parking Area
Kochomon (Inviting Birds Gate), a massive natural rock arch carved by the sea.
Kochomon (呼鳥門), literally meaning "Inviting Birds Gate," is a natural rock arch eroded by winds and waves over countless years into the shape of a gate. This massive rock arch carved by the sea was once known as a natural tunnel because National Highway 305 used to pass directly beneath it, though a new tunnel has now been built for safety. 🔗
Parking & Access: Parking area along the national highway on the south side of the road allows stopping to view this formation. Visitors can still approach on foot to see the beautiful contrast between the Sea of Japan, the towering cliffs, and the rich greenery, making it a popular photo spot. 🔗
Safety Note: The gate is now off-limits for passing through due to safety considerations (risk of falling rock). 🔗
Nearby Features: Adjacent to Guano Rock (Tori Kuso Iwa), a 100-meter-high cliff turned white by bird droppings. 🔗
2. Echizen Cape (Echizen Misaki) Observation Deck
The Echizen Cape Observation Deck is located on top of a hill overlooking Echizen Beach, offering one of the best places to appreciate the magnificent view of the Japan Sea coast. 🔗
Access: Parking area along the national highway on the south side of Torikuzu Iwa (bird droppings rock); winding road enters the mountain side leading to the observation deck. Stone steps lead from parking to the hilltop observation deck.
Parking: 70 parking spaces available, dispersed throughout the Echizen Misaki Suisen Land park area (shared with other facilities). 🔗
Facilities: Echizen Misaki Suisen Land (daffodil garden) halfway up the hill; Cape Echizen Lighthouse; observation deck with panoramic views. 🔗
Views: In October, visitors enjoy green hills and clear blue sea; panoramic views encompass the Japan Sea, rocky coastline, and rocks jutting from the shore.
Seasonal Note: While famous for daffodils (December-March), October offers clear coastal views without winter crowds. 🔗
3. Michi-no-Eki Kono (Roadside Station Kono)
Michi-no-Eki Kono is positioned at an elevation of 200 meters along the Echizen-Kaga Coast, offering wonderful views of the Sea of Japan. This roadside station in Minami-echizen Town provides standard michi-no-eki amenities. 🔗

4. Tojinbo Area Parking
Tojinbo's dramatic basalt cliff formations, one of the most spectacular geological sites along the Echizen Coast.
Tojinbo represents a one-kilometer stretch of rugged basalt cliffs along the Sea of Japan coast north of Fukui City. While technically a separate major attraction, parking areas near Tojinbo mark the northern extent of the Route 305 scenic coastal drive. 🔗
